Family and Individual
Immigration

The most important part of the family and Individual-based immigration application is to prove to the Immigration Bureau that you have a stable and continuous financial basis. It is important to explain to the Immigration Bureau that you and your family have sufficient income to continue to live in Japan and to be able to continue to pay pension and insurance.

In the actual application, you will need to submit various documentary evidence that is not on the Immigration Bureau's published list. This means that the applicant must submitt various documentary evidence to prove that you meet the requirements. If the information is inaccurate, the review process may be delayed significantly or the application may be rejected.

1. Family Visa

There are two main types of visas for inviting family members to Japan. The "Spouse or Children visa" is for the spouse or child of a Japanese national or permanent resident, and the "Dependent Visa" is for the family members of a foreign national with other status of residence to stay in Japan.

The Dependent Visa allows them to work up to 28 hours per week with an activity permit. On the other hand, the Spouse or Children visa for Japanese nationals and permanent residents has the same advantages as the Japanese national, including no restrictions on work and greatly reduced requirements for applying for permanent residence.

In both cases, applicants are examined to determine whether they have sufficient financial resources to live in Japan. In addition, spouses of Japanese nationals and permanent residents are required to prove with various documents that the marriage is not a sham and how sincere the marrige is.

The basic requirements for a Family Resident Visa are as follows.

In principle, only spouses and children can be invited for the above visas. Therefore, as for parents and siblings, it is necessary to call them with other visas. For other special cases, such as divorced couples, same-sex couples, or stepchildren of a spouse, please refer to the links in the detailed area or contact us directly.

2. Permanent Residence

Foreign residents who have been legally staying in Japan for a certain period of time may apply for permanent residence. The number of years required for application depends on the type of visa.

If you obtain a permanent resident visa in Japan, you will receive very preferential treatment compared to other visa holders. For example, there is no expiration date and no need to renew your visa. You may be able to take out a loan.

However, the application requirements for permanent residence are much stricter than those for other visas. The key to applying for permanent residence is to prove that you have no criminal record in the past several years, as well as no delinquent taxes, pensions, or health insurance premiums, and that you have sufficient financial resources. You must then submit a variety of documentary evidence to prove that you meet these conditions. If these conditions cannot be met due to unavoidable circumstances, the applicant must explain the reasons and prove that the reasons are true.

In the actual application process, you will need to submit various documentary evidences that are not listed on the website of the Ministry of Justice, and failure to submit the documentary evidences will be very disadvantageous in the examination process.

Below is the number of years required to apply for permanent residence. If you meet this number of years, you can apply for permanent residence. In addition, it takes a very long time to be examined for permanent residence. Therefore, even if you do not meet the number of years, you can apply early for a short period of time. 3. Naturalization

Naturalization is the process by which Japanese nationality is granted to a lawful resident after meeting the requirements.  You may apply for naturalization if you have physically and continuously stayed in Japan for at least five years. Of these five years, three years must be spent working with work status. However, there are various exceptions to this requirement, if you have lived in Japan for more than 10 years, this work period requirement is not necessary, and if you are legally married to a Japanese national, you can apply for naturalization after only three years of residence.

You must also be of good moral character. In addition, you must be at least 20 years old, have a good understanding of the Japanese language, and pay appropriate taxes and pensions.

In the case of naturalization, the application is made to the Legal Affairs Bureau, not the Immigration Bureau. In addition to the document examination, there will be an interview to determine your Japanese language ability and character.

Once your application for naturalization is completed, you become a Japanese national and lose your original nationality.

The 2nd and 3rd generations of Nikkei descendants are allowed to settle in Japan, while the 4th generation is granted resident status under certain conditions.

When applying for this visa at the Immigration Bureau, as with other visas, the applicant must prove that he/she has the financial ability to live in Japan and that he/she is of good conduct. In addition, it is very important to prove the relationship with 1st generation Japanese national in Japan. Basically, you need to gather everything you can, including old documents.

The legal regulations governing visas for Nikkei are complex and difficult to understand at a glance.
